Bring colour to your career! The New Zealand Certificate in Floristry is a hands-on programme where you’ll learn a range of techniques to create stunning floral arrangements and structures such as bouquets and posies, centrepieces, corsages, and wreaths.

As well as working with a wide range of plant materials and products, you will study business skills such as front-of-shop customer service, floristry retail, sales and marketing.

Floristry is a rewarding career for those who enjoy artistic creations. From large events or venue dressing through to individual personal orders, your work can bring spaces to life, provoke joy, or provide comfort.

Graduates of this programme will be employment-ready for work as a floral artist, and will understand the fundamentals of business services to work as an employee in a floral boutique or as a self-employed florist.

The purpose of this qualification is to enable the recognition of intermediate level skills and knowledge required by the floristry industry.

The qualification is for people with entry-level experience who wish to progress their skills and knowledge in the floristry industry. Learners will benefit by having a qualification that recognises their skills and provides a training and career pathway in the floristry industry.  Students will learn how to:

  • Prepare hand-tied, base medium, and wired floral items to meet customer specifications for a range of purposes and occasions
  • Display and maintain plant materials and arrangements in a retail outlet to maximise their impact
  • Provide front-of-shop customer service and develop skills in floristry retail, sales and marketing.

Programme Structure

Students will need to complete the four courses below.

861.376 Floristry Customer Service (15 credits)

  • Assist customers to meet their needs
  • Apply personal presentation skills in the floristry environment.
  • Prepare quotes to meet customer and business needs.

861.380 Floristry Display, Merchandising and Operations (15 credits)

  • Create detailed displays and maintain floristry products to provide maximum impact.
  • Apply design elements and principles to all display designs.
  • Promote floristry products and services.

861.381 Sympathy Designs (15 credits)

  • Consult on, plan, prepare and construct hand-tied, wired and base medium floristry items suitable for sympathy.
  • Apply design elements and principles to all sympathy designs.
  • Reflect on design and techniques used to create sympathy design items.

861.382 Celebration Occasions (15 credits)

  • Prepare and construct hand-tied, wired and base medium floristry items suitable for a range of celebration occasions.
  • Apply design elements and principles to all celebration occasion designs.
  • Reflect on design and techniques used to create celebration occasion items.

The industry will benefit having trainees who can work effectively and demonstrate intermediate level floristry skills. Graduates will be capable of working under broad guidance and will have some responsibility for their own performance. 

Gaining an industry recognised floristry qualification from SIT opens up opportunities to work in floristry retail, at hotels and event venues, in corporate organisations, or as a business owner.

Skills Required

At the School of Floristry, we operate in a professional industry standard floristry environment that reflects real world practice. Practical hands-on activities in the studio can require considerable use of physical mobility. While not essential, the following skills are an advantage.

  • be reasonably fit.
  • have good hand-eye coordination.
  • not be allergic to pollen or flowers.

English Language Requirements

Applicants, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having achieved one of the following

NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or

an International Baccalaureate Diploma or Cambridge A- level qualification for which the teaching and assessment was conducted in English; or

Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA),or Trinity College London Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL);or

Successful completion of all primary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand primary school years 1 to 8) and at least three years of secondary education (being the equivalent of three years from New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand,,Australia,Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States one of the countries listed in Rule 18.5 where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction; or

Successful completion of at least five years of secondary education (being the equivalent of New Zealand secondary school years 9 to 13) at schools in either New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States where the student was taught using English as the language of instruction; or

Successful completion of a Bachelor's Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters' Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States or

Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the two years preceding the proposed date of enrolment

IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)
TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill.
OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 3 (General) or (Workplace) b) Level 3 (General)
Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36
Language Cert - B1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than PASS in each skill
Trinity ISE - ISE I with no less than distinction in any band

To satisfactorily complete the New Zealand Certificate in Floristry (Level 3), and be awarded this qualification the student must successfully achieve:

  • A minimum of 60 credits in accordance with the programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Floristry (Level 3)
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Floristry full-time over 17 weeks or part-time over two years
Please Note: Students failing to attend for 80% of the timetabled programme hours may forfeit Zero Fees entitlement.
